ABOUT STEVE'S CAMP AT HORIZON FARMS
Founded in 2007 by Steven Kessner, Steve's Camp at Horizon Farms is dedicated to empowering urban youth to develop healthy bodies, hearts, and minds, and ultimately to emerge as leaders and prepare for fulfilling lives after high school.
The camp experience is the point of departure of our work: every summer, over 100 underserved urban teens spend twelve days at a beautiful working farm in upstate New York. Camp broadens our students’ realm of experience, and gives them a break from the routines and stresses of their day-to-day lives. Team-based challenges, farming and cooking workshops, and other camp activities allow participants to develop critical socioemotional, leadership, and life skills.
These skills are deepened through our school year programming. Through after-school and weekend programs, campers stay connected to the camp community and plan for their lives after high school.
Steve's Camp at Horizon Farms is the brainchild of board chair Steve Kessner. The son of a cab driver from the Bronx, Steve grew up in a neighborhood with few constructive activities for kids. The highlight of each year was traveling to a bungalow colony in the Catskill Mountains, where he could escape the city and see the stars. Steve's father had the good fortune of picking up a Dartmouth alum in his taxi, who eventually enabled Steve to attend Dartmouth at age 16. Today, Steve is a successful real estate professional who is fulfilling his dream of having a summer camp in the Catskills for young people with a background similar to his own.
